‘I don’t need to attend church, I just watch it online’

So, I’m pretty open on my blog about my love for the local church.

I do believe in the local church with all my being and with everything that I am.

And, Yes, I believe that the…

Local Church is the Hope of the World.

But, I was kind of troubled and just had a pit in my stomach recently when someone said this to me…

I don’t need to attend church, I just watch it online”.

Hmmm. That math doesn’t add up to me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I watch A LOT of Church online. Probably 8-12 messages in a given week. I’m a bit of a junkie. But, I’m also a communicator of God’s word and nothing gets me more pumped up to teach, than learning from people who are a crazy ton smarter than I am.

But, that can’t be the replacement for being a part of an actual community.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (The Message)

“Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching”

I think it’s pretty apparent that I need to do everything I can to NOT avoid community. Community with my church family, and community with my small group.

Here’s what I know the church is not:

  • A building
  • A service
  • A social gathering
  • A block club
  • A country club
  • A club for all the cool kids
  • A place I just attend
  • A place I tip God
  • A place I go to feel good
  • A place I complain about the loud music
  • A place where I pretend to have it all together
  • A place where I willingly exclude others

Here’s what I know the church is:

  • The Hope of the World
  • The greatest tool ever invented to SHARE JESUS
  • The place to find community
  • The place to find hope
  • The place to find accountability
  • The place to give
  • The place to serve
  • The place to pour into others
  • The place to be challenged by God’s word
  • The place to worship in community

I understand there are moments in life where we can’t be a part of our Church community. Family crisis…sickness…job…travel.

But, I think replacing it for an online community fully is not the right way.

Be a part of the HOPE!

Gather together with your church community and then release Jesus on the world.

Be Jesus. Be like Jesus. Love like Jesus.

  1. Ahhh, I’ve heard this a number of times and totally agree. We may often be able to find better music and better teachers online, but you end up missing out on all the gifts that god gives when we gather together as the church.
